Whatever Happened To The Cast Of My Mad Fat Diary

Remember the show that made us all laugh, cry, and maybe even feel a little understood? Yep, we're talking about My Mad Fat Diary. It was one of those shows that just got it. Rae Earl, our wonderfully awkward and hilarious protagonist, navigating the choppy waters of adolescence in the 90s. The show was a breath of fresh air, wasn't it? It tackled big stuff like mental health and body image with such honesty and humour. And let's not forget the incredible cast who brought these characters to life. So, what have they all been up to since we last saw them trying to survive teenagehood with Rae and her trusty diary?
Rae Earl (Played by Sharon Rooney)
Oh, Sharon Rooney! She was the heart and soul of the show. Rae was so relatable, with her witty internal monologues and her sometimes disastrous attempts at fitting in. Sharon absolutely nailed it. She made us root for Rae, even when Rae was at her most chaotic. Since My Mad Fat Diary wrapped up, Sharon has been incredibly busy. She's appeared in a bunch of brilliant things. You might have seen her in the comedy film Brittany Runs a Marathon, which was fantastic. She also popped up in the popular TV series The Durrells and had a role in the charming movie Notes on a Scandal. More recently, she's been making waves in the critically acclaimed show The Queen and I. Sharon has this amazing ability to be both incredibly funny and deeply moving, a skill she honed perfectly as Rae. She's definitely one to keep an eye on – always bringing that spark of energy and genuine emotion to everything she does.
Finn Nelson (Played by Nico Mirallegro)
And then there was Nico Mirallegro, playing the effortlessly cool (and sometimes brooding) Finn Nelson. Who didn't have a crush on Finn? He was Rae's big teenage love, and their story was a rollercoaster, wasn't it? Nico brought such a quiet intensity to Finn. You could feel his struggles and his affections for Rae. Since leaving Stamford, Nico has also been building a very impressive acting career. He's starred in several other TV dramas, including The Village and The Runaways. He also had a notable role in the gritty crime drama Common Ground. Nico often chooses projects that are a bit more serious and character-driven, showing off his versatility as an actor. He's got this knack for playing characters who have a lot going on beneath the surface, just like Finn. It’s great to see him exploring different kinds of roles and proving how talented he is.
Must Read
Chloe (Played by Jodie Comer)
Before she became a global superstar, Jodie Comer was the seemingly perfect Chloe. Rae's childhood best friend, who Rae thought had moved on and forgotten all about her. Chloe was a bit of a mystery at first, wasn't she? And Jodie played that perfectly. She had that air of effortless cool that made you understand why Rae was so intimidated by her. Well, we all know what Jodie Comer has gone on to do. She's now one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation. Her role as Villanelle in Killing Eve was absolutely groundbreaking and earned her an Emmy. She's also starred in major films like The Last Duel and Free Guy, alongside Ryan Reynolds. It’s incredible to see the journey she’s taken since her time as Chloe, but even back then, you could see the immense talent bubbling beneath the surface. She was destined for big things, and she's certainly achieved them!

Archie (Played by Miles Jupp)
Let's not forget the lovely Miles Jupp as Archie. Rae's gentle and slightly eccentric uncle who was always there for her. He was the calming presence in Rae's often chaotic life. Miles Jupp is a comedian as well as an actor, and he brought a wonderful warmth and humour to Archie. He made us smile every time he was on screen. Miles has continued to be a busy man in the world of comedy and acting. He's appeared in various TV shows and films, often bringing his signature dry wit and charm. He's known for his stand-up routines and his appearances on panel shows. You might have seen him in shows like Grantchester or the film The Death of Stalin. He's a true delight and has a knack for making even the most ordinary characters feel special and memorable.
Izzy (Played by Jessica Barden)
And what about Jessica Barden, who played the vibrant and fashion-forward Izzy. Izzy was Rae's new best friend, the one who really helped her come out of her shell. Jessica brought so much life and energy to Izzy. She was a breath of fresh air for Rae, and for us watching. Jessica has gone on to have a very successful career, most notably as one of the stars of the Netflix series The End of the F*ing World. She played Alyssa in that show, another fiercely independent and unforgettable character. She's also appeared in films like Holler and Scarborough. Jessica has a talent for playing strong, complex female characters who aren't afraid to be themselves. She’s certainly made her mark on television and film.

Rob (Played by Vincent Franklin)
Finally, we have Vincent Franklin as Rae's stepfather, Rob. Rob was the epitome of trying your best, even when you’re a bit clueless. He wanted to do right by Rae, and Vincent Franklin portrayed that with such a perfect blend of awkwardness and genuine affection. He made Rob surprisingly lovable. Vincent Franklin is a very experienced actor and has been in a huge number of productions. He's known for his roles in shows like The Thick of It and Doctor Who. He also had a memorable part in the popular series Bodyguard. Vincent is fantastic at playing those slightly exasperated but ultimately good-hearted characters that we all know and love. He’s a true character actor who always adds something special to the scene.
My Mad Fat Diary was more than just a TV show; it was an experience. It captured the messy, hilarious, and sometimes painful reality of growing up with such authenticity. Seeing where these incredibly talented actors have ended up just goes to show the power of a great show and the brilliant performances that made it so special. If you haven't watched it, or if it's been a while, perhaps it's time for a rewatch? You might just find yourself falling in love with Rae and her gang all over again.
