Whatever Happened To Michael Shanks From Stargate

Whatever Happened To Michael Shanks From Stargate

Remember Daniel Jackson? The guy from Stargate SG-1 who was always deciphering ancient alien languages and looking a little rumpled? Yeah, that's Michael Shanks. He played the brilliant, kind-hearted archaeologist who somehow kept saving the galaxy with his brains, and occasionally his good looks.

For ten whole seasons, we followed Daniel's adventures. He went through a lot, didn't he? Died a few times, got zapped, traveled to other dimensions, and even managed to fall in love with a Tok'ra. All in a day's work for a Stargate team, I guess!

But then, you know, the show ended. It's always a bit sad when a favorite series wraps up. You wonder what happens to all those characters you grew to love. So, what exactly happened to Michael Shanks after he hung up his SG-1 jacket?

The easy answer is, he's been busy! He didn't just vanish into the alien dust of some distant planet. Life after a massive sci-fi hit can be a bit of a maze, you know? Lots of different paths to take.

One of the first things he did was dive right back into the sci-fi pool. He showed up in Torchwood, another British sci-fi darling. It was a bit darker, a bit edgier than Stargate, but it was great to see him back in action.

Then there was Smallville. Yep, our favorite archeologist got to play a superhero villain! He played the "Order of the World’s Doctors" leader, Carter Hall, also known as Hawkman. It was a fun little stint, seeing him in a cape and all.

But here's where things get a little fuzzy, and maybe this is where my "unpopular opinion" starts to creep in. It feels like after Stargate SG-1, Michael Shanks, or at least the version of him that was so beloved on the show, got a little… lost in the shuffle.

300: Michael Shanks Part 2, "Daniel Jackson" in Stargate SG-1

It’s like he was this amazing, perfectly crafted puzzle piece for Stargate, and then suddenly the puzzle was finished, and he was a spare piece that didn’t quite fit anywhere else as perfectly. Does that make sense?

He’s been in movies, of course. Lots of them. But how many of them were the kind of big, splashy blockbusters that make you say, "Wow, Michael Shanks is a huge star!" Not many, I'd venture to guess.

He's been in TV shows too. Recurring roles, guest spots, you name it. He's popped up in everything from crime dramas to medical shows. He’s a working actor, and that's fantastic! We love to see our favorites still gracing our screens.

But and this is the key point for me personally, it doesn't always feel like he’s been given the right roles. The roles that showcase that unique blend of intelligence, charm, and that subtle, almost melancholic vulnerability that made Daniel Jackson so darn captivating.

Think about it. Daniel Jackson wasn't just smart; he was passionate. He cared so deeply. He’d get so fired up about ancient civilizations and the injustices faced by alien races. He had this quiet intensity that you just couldn't take your eyes off.

And Michael Shanks delivered that performance with such authenticity. He made us believe in the impossible. He made us root for the underdog. He made us want to learn ancient languages, just in case.

So, when I see him in roles that are, shall we say, less demanding, or perhaps just less… him, I feel a pang of… what's the word? Disappointment? Or maybe just a yearning for more of that Stargate magic.

It's like seeing a rare gemstone being used as a paperweight. It's still beautiful, but you know it's capable of so much more.

He did have a starring role in a Canadian sci-fi series called Saving Hope. That was a good one! He played a doctor who was sort of in a coma, but still interacting with the living. It was a bit supernatural, a bit medical drama, and it gave him a chance to shine again.

And let's not forget the Stargate reunions! He’s been part of the Stargate conventions, meeting fans, and reliving those glorious days. It's always a treat to see him back in that world, even if it's just for a chat and a photo op.

But the big question lingers: why hasn't he had that one, defining role post-Stargate that really catapults him to the next level? The role that makes everyone say, "Oh yeah, that's Michael Shanks! He's brilliant!"

Is it Hollywood? Is it the roles available? Is it just the nature of the entertainment industry, where once you’re in a genre, it’s hard to break out?

Maybe it’s just that we, the fans, are a bit stuck in our Stargate ways. We see Michael Shanks and we instantly think of Daniel Jackson. It’s hard to separate the actor from the iconic character he embodied for so long.

And maybe that’s not entirely a bad thing. It means the character left a lasting impression. It means he touched our lives. It means Daniel Jackson is forever etched in our pop culture memories.

But still, a small part of me wishes that more people knew the incredible range and talent that Michael Shanks possesses. That they weren’t just saying, "Oh, the guy from Stargate," but rather, "Wow, that actor is phenomenal!"

He's been in independent films, voice acting, even some theater. He's a versatile performer. He's not afraid to try new things. And that's commendable.

Perhaps the industry just hasn't caught up to his potential. Perhaps he's waiting for that perfect script, that perfect role, that will showcase everything he can do.

And if that's the case, I, for one, will be eagerly waiting. Because while Daniel Jackson is a legend, Michael Shanks is the man who brought him to life. And I have a feeling he's got plenty more magic up his sleeve.

So, what happened to Michael Shanks? He's still acting. He's still creating. He's still a fan favorite. He's just… waiting for his next big moment. And I, for one, am rooting for him to get it. Maybe he'll do another Stargate movie? A guy can dream, right?
