You’re strutting around, pointing him out to neighbors, feeling like a genuine gardening guru. “Oh, this old thing?” you’ll say, casually. “Yes, Bernard, he’s quite the trooper.”

Then comes year two. Bernard is still doing his thing, mostly. Maybe a few less perfect blooms. A slight droop here and there. You might blame the weather. “Bit of a strange spring,” you’ll mutter. “Hope Bernard perks up.”

Year three. This is where things can get… interesting. Bernard starts developing a personality. A bit of a moody teenager phase. Some years he’s magnificent. Other years, he’s a bit of a bare-bones affair. You start to question your pruning techniques. Did you cut him too hard? Not hard enough? Is it that spot where the dog likes to… you know… express himself?

That’s practically a geological era in gardening terms. This is the part where I raise an eyebrow and gently suggest that maybe those articles are talking about a different species of rose bush altogether. A more stoic, less dramatic variety. Perhaps a rose bush that doesn't have to contend with your enthusiastic toddler trying to "help" with the watering.

It's a bit like asking how long a good joke will last. It depends on who's telling it, and if anyone's still laughing.

So, what’s the real answer? How long will your rose bush live? Honestly, it’s a gamble. A beautiful, fragrant gamble. Some might surprise you and become the venerable matriarch of your garden, a constant source of beauty. They’ll witness children grow up, perhaps even grandchildren. They’ll be the sturdy, reliable friends you can always count on for a splash of color.

Others will be more like a fleeting romance. They’ll arrive with a flourish, give you a season or two of absolute magic, and then… well, they’ll gently fade away. Perhaps they’ll succumb to a particularly nasty aphid attack. Maybe the local deer population decides they're the tastiest thing on the block. Or perhaps, and this is my personal favorite theory, they simply get bored. They’ve had their moment in the sun, they’ve been admired, and now it’s time for their next adventure. Off to a retirement community for retired rose bushes, perhaps?

The funny thing is, we often don’t even notice when they’re truly gone. You’ll look at that spot where Bernard used to be, and you’ll think, “Huh, haven’t seen any roses from there lately.” And then you’ll promptly forget, distracted by the allure of a new, shiny rose bush with a name that sounds even more impressive. Like ‘Starlight Serenade’ or ‘Velvet Twilight’.

And so the cycle continues. We plant, we admire, we fret, and we hope. We tell ourselves, “This time, this rose bush will be the one to last a lifetime.” We’re optimists, us gardeners. We have to be. Because if we weren’t, the sheer unpredictability of it all, the constant battle against nature’s whims, would be enough to make us pack away our trowels and stick to plastic plants. And where’s the fun in that?

So, the next time you’re admiring your rose bush, give it a little nod. Enjoy its beauty. Appreciate its effort. But maybe, just maybe, don’t get too attached to the idea of it living forever. Embrace the present. Embrace the blooms. And when the time comes, whether it’s next year or in 50 years, know that Bernard (or whoever you named it) lived a good, thorny life. And that’s really all any of us can ask for, isn’t it?
