All Creatures Great And Small Season 5 What To Expect

Oh, All Creatures Great and Small. The show that makes you want to move to the Yorkshire Dales and wear tweed all day. If you’re anything like me, then the end of Season 4 left you with a little ache in your heart. We waved goodbye to some familiar faces, and things felt… well, a bit uncertain. But fear not, fellow Dales enthusiasts! Season 5 is on its way, and I, your humble (and perhaps slightly biased) Dales correspondent, have some thoughts on what we might be in for.
First things first, let’s talk about our beloved Siegfried Farnon. Bless his ever-so-slightly chaotic heart. This man is the glue that holds Skeldale House together, even if he sometimes applies it a little too liberally. I suspect we’ll see more of Siegfried wrestling with his own brilliance and his penchant for, shall we say, unconventional veterinary methods. Will he finally get that new set of practice books he’s been eyeing? Probably not. But will he mend a broken lamb with a twinkle in his eye and a stern word? Absolutely. We love him for it.
The Returning Cast
And what about our dear James Herriot? Our earnest vet-in-training, navigating the messy, muddy, and magnificent world of animal care. I have a feeling James will continue to grow, perhaps embracing his role at Skeldale with even more confidence. We’ll likely see him facing new challenges, both with tricky animal cases and, dare I say it, with his personal life. Will he finally master the art of balancing work and, well, life? Let’s hope so, but knowing James, there will be plenty of heartwarming moments where he throws himself headfirst into helping a creature in need, consequences be darned.
Must Read
Then there’s the ever-patient and wonderfully wise Tristan Farnon. Tristan is, in my opinion, the unsung hero of the series. He’s got a good heart, even if it’s often hidden under a layer of playful mischief. I’m hoping Season 5 gives Tristan even more opportunities to shine. Perhaps he’ll find his footing in the veterinary world in a way that truly suits him. Maybe he'll even surprise Siegfried with a particularly clever diagnosis or a perfectly executed surgery. A man can dream, right? And if he doesn’t surprise Siegfried, well, the ensuing sibling rivalry will be entertainment enough for me.
And we cannot forget the formidable and utterly charming Mrs. Hall. She is the bedrock of Skeldale House. The keeper of the secrets, the provider of the perfect cuppa, and the dispenser of sage advice. I imagine Mrs. Hall will continue to be the steady hand, the comforting presence that grounds everyone. Will she finally let Siegfried’s perpetually messy desk get the better of her? Doubtful. She’s far too formidable for that. I suspect we’ll see her offering quiet support, a knowing glance, and maybe even a gentle nudge in the right direction for everyone at Skeldale.

And of course, there’s Helen Alderson. Our strong, capable, and ever-so-lovely Helen. I’m very eager to see where her journey takes her this season. She’s got a wonderful connection with animals, and I’m sure she’ll continue to be a vital part of the Skeldale team. Will her relationship with James continue to blossom? One can only hope! Their quiet understanding and shared love for the Dales are just… chef’s kiss.
Potential New Pains and Pleasures
Now, for some of my unpopular opinions. I’m kind of hoping for a new animal-related crisis that shakes things up a bit. Not a dramatic, world-ending one, of course. More like a… particularly stubborn flock of sheep that refuse to be herded, or a mysterious ailment plaguing the local dairy cows. Something that requires all hands on deck and maybe even a bit of creative problem-solving that involves Siegfried’s unique brand of genius.

I also wouldn’t mind seeing some new characters pop into Darrowby. Not to replace anyone, heavens no! But perhaps a rival vet who’s a bit too modern for Siegfried’s taste, or a local farmer with a truly magnificent prize-winning pig that needs urgent attention. A little bit of fresh energy can go a long way, can’t it? It keeps things interesting, and it gives our established characters someone new to bounce off of.
And speaking of new challenges, I wonder if Season 5 will explore more of the wider impact of the war. We’ve seen glimpses, but the ripples are still being felt. Perhaps some of the Dales folk will be dealing with lingering effects, and James and the Skeldale team will be there to offer their quiet, steadfast support. It would be a poignant addition to the series.

Ultimately, what I expect from Season 5 is more of what we love. More heartwarming stories of animal welfare, more charmingly awkward human interactions, and more breathtaking views of the Yorkshire countryside. It’s the kind of show that wraps you up like a warm blanket on a cold night. It reminds us of the simple joys, the importance of community, and the unwavering dedication of those who care for our creatures, great and small. So, grab your knitting, make a pot of tea, and prepare to be charmed all over again.
I just hope there are plenty of puppies. And kittens. And maybe a particularly fluffy sheep. A vet can dream!
